CSA member Nancy Tame is keeping a beehive at the farm this year. Bees are shipped via the postal service and arrive in a wire mesh package as seen above. The queen is shipped in a separate box that hangs in the larger box (second picture above). The bees eat a candy plug out of the queen's shipping container, allowing her to be gradually released into the hive.
In the first picture, the small queen box has been placed in the hive and alot of bees have been dumped out of the wire mesh shipping container into the hive. The bees that remain in the container will smell that the queen in now in the hive box and will gradually find their way into it before sundown.
